Using Home Appliances Properly

To ensure the safe use of energy in the home, consumers need to do their part and to follow recommended safety and operating practices.

For example, consumers should be aware of the following:

  • Never use flammable liquids around appliances.
  • Never store aerosol cans or containers of combustible liquids on or near appliances.
  • Never attempt to bypass safety devices.
  • Never use an oven or range burner to warm a room.
  • Never allow children to play near appliances.
  • Never permit any excavations in your yard without first checking with your local natural gas utility or ”one-call” notification system.

The National Fire Protection Association says that misuse of appliances is one of the primary causes of accidents involving home equipment. Threfore, consumers should always read and follow any safety messages or warnings on the appliance or in its user's manual.
