Atmos Energy, the country’s largest all-natural-gas utility, is launching Atmos Energy Cooks to offer recipes and tips for preparing delicious meals using natural gas appliances. Natural gas long has been associated with good cooking as shown by these images of the gas company’s activities.

World War II Canning Cookbook
Before frozen and convenience foods, homemakers relied on canning to preserve vegetables and fruits. During World War II, canning became a patriotic duty for storing produce from Victory Gardens and for replacing other foods that were rationed in grocery stores. One of Atmos Energy’s forerunner companies, Lone Star Gas, offered this free cookbook with instructions and recipes—similar to the help found today on the gas company’s new cooking Web site, Atmos Energy Cooks.

Flame Room
During the 1950s, Atmos Energy’s predecessor companies hosted Flame Rooms in which gas company home economists demonstrated tasty recipes, cooking tips and the latest natural gas appliances. The gas company also sponsored popular cooking shows at state fairs, in school classrooms and on early-day television. Atmos Energy Cooks is the company’s latest way to offer helpful cooking information on the Internet.

During the 1960s, natural gas utilities promoted the advantages of natural gas cooking to compete with electric companies for the booming American housing market. Gas companies that later became part of Atmos Energy sponsored countless promotions, such as this appearance by Mrs. Tennessee, to encourage homemakers to chose natural gas kitchen appliances.

Author Brian Cummings
Former newspaperman, business consultant and cookbook author Brian Cummings is the first cooking expert to be featured on Atmos Energy Cooks, a new Web site sponsored by natural gas utility Atmos Energy. The site introduces a new chef and recipe every two weeks, adding to a large collection of tested recipes, cooking instructions and tips. Plans are to showcase dishes and cuisine from chefs at restaurants, hotels and resorts in the company’s 12-state service area. Atmos Energy also is inviting its customers and employees to share their favorite recipes.

Retroreflector Bends Beam (picture) - Atmos Energy used a retroreflector to bounce an invisible infrared beam around a corner and back to analyze for 14 compounds in the air during remediation in downtown Bristol, Tenn.
Bristol Removal Action Photo (picture) - The Bristol, Tenn., remediation work, as it looked in November 2004, resulted in Atmos Energy receiving the 2005 Environmental Excellence New Technology Award from the Southern Gas Association.
