Stay Safe and Warm this Winter

Be prepared for cold weather by performing household safety checks and implementing energy-saving measures, so you can stay warm while managing your winter heating bills. Consider taking steps now to help control your energy use, stay safe, and manage your bill for the upcoming winter heating season.

How can I use energy wisely this winter?

Winter Energy Saving Tips

  • Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when you are away from home.
  • Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Leaving the damper open is like keeping a window wide open. The warm air goes right up the chimney!
  • Change or clean your heating and air conditioning unit filter regularly and according to the manufacturer's instructions. Your equipment will use less energy if it ‘breathes’ more easily.
  • Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees. Water heating accounts for as much as 25 percent of the energy consumed in your home.

What steps can I take to stay safe this winter?

  • Perform routine household safety checks like ensuring smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in working condition.
  • Operate your appliances in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. House piping should be tested or inspected periodically by a licensed plumber.
  • If you ever smell or suspect a natural gas leak, do not wait! Leave the premises immediately then call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866.322.8667

Why have natural gas prices increased?

The cost of natural gas is a tradeable commodity that is driven by global supply and demand and can fluctuate monthly based on market conditions. Atmos Energy is a regulated utility and natural gas is a “pass through cost” to our customers, which means no profit is added to the commodity and transportation costs charged by suppliers.

How is the volatility of gas costs managed?

To manage the volatility of gas costs, we closely monitor all factors that affect natural gas prices and utilize underground storage fields to provide customers with reliable natural gas during periods of peak demand.

How can I better understand my bill?

These factors determine the amount of your Atmos Energy bill:

  • The amount of natural gas used
  • The natural gas commodity cost, which is a pass-through cost
  • Customer and facility or delivery charges to your home or business
  • Taxes/fees

Your bill will include how much natural gas you used for that billing period, your current meter reading, a breakdown of charges and credits, the total amount due, and important messages from Atmos Energy.
