Atmos Energy donated $3,000 in scholarship funds to the East Lubbock Resident Owned Business Initiative (EL ROBI).

EL ROBI is a five week, on-the-job training program that prepares and places participants in plumbing, electric and heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, careers. The group has partnered with businesses throughout the community for the initiative.

There are several ways for participants to pay for the program, said EL ROBI Project Manager Reggie Dial, but the donation from Atmos Energy will offer more opportunities.

“This gives them the opportunity to jump start their career and be a part of the Lubbock economic boom,” Dial said.

Philip Littlejohn, vice president of rates and regulatory affairs at Atmos Energy, said the donation is the first step for the energy company to partner with EL ROBI. He said they plan to be a bigger part of the per-apprenticeship program in the future, but that the donation was a way to immediately help.

“We also really wanted to do it to encourage other corporate organizations in the community to also potentially partner EL ROBI,” Littlejohn said.

Becky Palmer, president of the West Texas division of Atmos Energy, said having a top-notch workforce is important for a community, and programs like EL ROBI help achieve that. Skilled laborers are currently in high demand, she said.

“It helps to give us access to another pool of applicants, to ensure that we’re really hiring from all parts of our community and making sure our organization is representative of the communities that we serve,” Palmer said. “It’s very important.”

The first five EL ROBI participants are now working, starting their careers, Dial said. He said it has been rewarding to manage a program that is making a difference in lives and communities.
