Atmos Energy’s Video “Gus the Gopher for Call 811” Wins American Gas Association SAVE Award

DALLAS  –  The American Gas Association awarded Atmos Energy with the top video in the AGA Safety Awareness Video Excellence (SAVE) Awards’ external category.

Atmos Energy’s submission, “Gus the Gopher for Call 811” was selected by a public vote and review by an outside award committee.

Gus the Gopher serves as a safety mascot for Atmos Energy, reminding the public to call 811 prior to digging to ensure underground utilities are marked. By calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to their local one-call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig.  Professional locators are then sent to the digging site to mark the locations of underground utility-owned lines with flags and spray paint, free of charge.

“We want to thank those who voted for this video to help spread Gus the Gopher’s safety message of calling 811,” said John McDill, Atmos Energy vice president of pipeline safety. “The 811 program is provided at no charge, and it can save you time and money, as well as prevent threats to life and property.”

The most common causes of outside natural gas leaks are digging or construction that disturbs natural gas pipelines. Even minor damage can weaken a pipeline and lead to a future leak.

If a natural gas pipeline is nicked, scraped or dented, Atmos Energy reminds you to call 911 and then Atmos Energy’s emergency number at 866.322.8667 for pipeline inspection and repair.
