Daylight Saving Means Time for a Safety Check

Change your clocks and your batteries to stay safe

DALLAS – When setting clocks back an hour for Daylight Saving Time, Atmos Energy reminds you to keep your family safe by also checking your household safety devices, natural gas piping and appliances.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Atmos Energy recommend consumers install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors that have an audible alarm when unsafe levels of CO are detected.

CO is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced by incomplete combustion of heating appliances, portable generators and automobile engines. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states CO’s toxic fumes are impossible to see, taste or smell, and therefore can be deadly.

Natural Gas Detectors

Natural gas detectors measure methane, the main component of natural gas. These detectors are an additional way to detect the presence of gas and must be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Natural Gas Piping and Appliances

Atmos Energy does not maintain the natural gas lines on your property beyond our meter. This is the same as other utilities, such as your electrical wiring and water pipes. For your safety, your natural gas piping and appliances should be inspected periodically by a licensed plumber or qualified contractor.

In addition to regular safety checks, operate your appliances in accordance with manufacturer instructions to stay safe and prevent carbon monoxide build up.

Visit our website for additional safety tips.

If you ever smell or suspect a natural gas leak, do not wait! Leave the premises immediately and call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667. Do not rely on your sense of smell alone to detect the presence of natural gas.  Use all of your senses —smell, listen or look—to check for signs of a leak.
