A unique online tutoring program pairs 18 Mississippi Division employees with first-grade students at Clausell Elementary for tutoring sessions once a week throughout the school year. Tutors sign up for a specific day and time to spend 30 minutes per week with their assigned student.

“At my designated time, 9 a.m. every Tuesday, from my office in Flowood, I call the teacher’s classroom,” said Director of Public Affairs Robert Lesley, who has worked with first-grader Devon since September.

“The teacher answers and puts headphones on Devon. He sits in front of a laptop and I am at my computer. During the session, we read stories together and play games that build comprehension and word knowledge.”

Working with the same student all year builds a positive, trusting environment between the employee and the child,” says Manager of Public Affairs Linda Waters.

“Teachers and parents have told us this program had made a real difference in the student’s reading ability and their attitude about school.”

Employees have participated in the TutorMate online literacy program since 2015, the year the program was introduced in the Jackson Public School District.
