Many of us are familiar with classic images of Red Cross nurses helping American soldiers and civilian war victims during World War I. Maybe you have taken a class through the Red Cross, such as first aid certification or swimming lessonsHave you ever given blood or received donated blood?

Since 1881, the American Red Cross has been dedicated to preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. After receiving their first congressional charter in 1900the American Red Cross was tasked by the federal government with providing services to members of the armed forces and their families as well as providing disaster relief in the United States and around the world.  By 1940the American Red Cross expanded its services and developed the first nationwide civilian blood program that is maintained today and provides more than 40 percent of the blood products in the United States.

Committed to the motto of “all day, every day, wherever someone needs us,” the American Red Cross has developed a variety of programs that:

  • Meet immediate disaster-caused needs such as flood relief, earthquake relief, home fire relief, wildfire relief, and winter storm relief for individuals, families, and communities.

  • Organize lifesaving blood donations

  • Offer training and skills to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies such as CPR training, AED training, and First Aid training.

  • Help members of the military, veterans, and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service.

  • Provide relief in nearly every corner of the globe. Red Cross Red Crescent teams respond to emergencies—such as earthquakes, droughts, and health epidemics—but also help neighborhoods prepare for future disasters and ensure that children receive the vaccines they need to stay healthy.

Atmos Energy has supported the American Red Cross’s mission for more than 22 years by donating more than $2 million to providfood, shelter, relief supplies, and other assistance during and following natural disasters across the 1,400 communities it serves.

Our support helps meet the immediate needs of neighbors directly impacted by wildfires and recovery planning following natural disasters,” said John McDill, Atmos Energy vice president of pipeline safety.  Every eight minutes, someone affected by disaster is helped by donations to the American Red Cross, and we are proud to support their mission to provide help and hope to our communities.
