Unless you are an engineer, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about all the ways in which engineering impacts our daily life. But for thousands of years, engineers have designed almost every product, facility, and structure built to enhance the health and safety of our communities – innovations like safe drinking water, smartphones, skyscrapers, home appliances, televisions, athletic equipment, pharmaceuticals, even the ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza.
In 1951, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) established National Engineers Week to generate interest in engineering and technology careers and ensure a diverse and well educated workforce for generations to come. Here at Atmos Energy, we celebrate our engineering team every day for their contributions to the operations, right of way, marketing, system planning, and public affairs teams to safely install, maintain, expand, and care for our resilient pipeline and distribution system.
“One of the best parts of an engineer’s job is seeing the complete life cycle of a project from beginning to end,” said Tammy Espinoza, Atmos Energy vice president of technical services who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University. “It is truly an incredible experience collaborating with a variety of departments to scope and design a project and then witness the construction and ultimately the impact of an idea that serves the greater good. As engineers we dedicate our professional knowledge to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.”
Atmos Energy employs 154 mechanical, civil, petroleum, chemical, and electrical engineers who comprise the engineering services team. In addition, many of our engineers have transitioned outside of the discipline to share their engineering knowledge such as marketing, pipeline safety, public affairs, operations, or executive management team members.
“We strive to bring out the best in our team members and offer continued education through our tuition reimbursement program to all employees,” said Jeremy Taylor, Atmos Energy senior talent acquisition specialist. “We also foster an environment where engineering professionals have the opportunity to expand their career path by cross training and leveraging their talents in another department.”
Atmos Energy is currently seeking team members to join our engineering family. Candidates interested in applying must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and may visit atmosenergy.com/careers to learn more about specific opportunities.
“Our engineers thrive in a data driven environment,” added Taylor. “They possess a unique ability to process and interpret the data that transforms an idea into an attainable project, all while forecasting the desired outcome.”
With its 2022 theme, “Reimagining the Possible,” National Engineers Week is an occasion to celebrate the important work of our engineers and engage the next generation of innovators, as well as a time to remember that engineering achievements have improved our quality of life for thousands of years.
