Natural gas plays a vital role in fueling a low carbon energy future that ensures families have access to safe, reliable, and affordable energy while also protecting and preserving our environment. A perfect example of this initiative in action is our partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build energy efficient and affordable homes for deserving families.
For 20 years, Atmos Energy has partnered with Greeley-Weld (Colo.) Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing for neighbors in need. Combining its sustainability efforts with its commitment to Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities, Atmos Energy, in partnership with the Schlessman Family Foundation, has built 15 homes, donated more than $1 million, volunteered thousands of hours, and provided innovative energy solutions that lowers energy bills for new homeowners.
Carrying forth the mission to empower Habitat families with a long-term affordable housing plan, Atmos Energy and the Schlessman Family Foundation recently completed Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity’s first Zero Net Energy (ZNE) demonstration home in Evans, Colorado.
“A ZNE home produces as much energy as it consumes each year, thanks to a balanced energy approach that combines high efficiency natural gas heating and water heating, building envelope efficiency, and photovoltaic solar technology to make the home extremely efficient and environmentally responsible,” said Rob Leivo, Atmos Energy vice president of marketing. “Affordable energy is critical to affordable housing and preliminary energy reports for the design of this ZNE home estimate the average utility bill at less than $50 a month for gas and electricity combined.”
In 2022, Atmos Energy is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build two more ZNE homes in Dallas and Taylor, Texas for deserving families.
In our West Texas Division, Atmos Energy is partnering with Amarillo Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) to deliver natural gas services to six new homes in the newly developed Lee Green’s Addition of El Barrio neighborhood. Furthering AHFH’s mission to build affordable housing for those in need, Atmos Energy
will donate $40,000 over the next three years to install natural gas service lines and ENERGY STAR certified natural gas appliances such as heating units, water heaters, and ranges to each of the homes.
“A partnership between Atmos Energy and Amarillo Habitat for Humanity is such a wonderful opportunity for us to work together and do what we do best—to make safe, affordable homes,” said Alason Moorhead, Amarillo Habitat for Humanity executive director. “We are delighted to debut our first Habitat neighborhood featuring natural gas appliances. Six families will enjoy the benefits of Atmos Energy’s generous gift, and we look forward to what the future holds for this incredible, longstanding collaboration.”
