National Weatherization Day is observed annually on Oct. 30 to highlight the importance of homes that are more energy efficient, comfortable, and affordable. For Atmos Energy, weatherization is a key part of how we help customers reduce energy use, lower their monthly bills and improve safety across our communities. 

Weatherization is the process of improving a building's energy efficiency by making upgrades that reduce energy consumption. In Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, and Louisiana, we provide a range of energy-efficient appliances rebates, along with complimentary energy and water-saving kits that include items like shower heads, aerators, and pipe seal tape. We also offer free home energy assessments, where an expert visits your home to identify ways to maximize energy efficiency, lower costs, and enhance comfort. These small adjustments can make a noticeable difference, especially during colder months when natural gas heating plays a vital role in keeping homes warm and reliable.

On the coldest day of the year, natural gas delivers three times as much energy as the electrical grid delivers on the hottest day. This is why weatherizing your home and using energy efficient appliances is important in lowering your monthly energy bills. 

Weatherization also supports comfort and safety. Proper insulation reduces temperature swings, while well-maintained heating systems operate more reliably and with fewer emissions. These improvements add up to benefit individual households and the broader community. "When customers see lower bills and a cozier home, they often realize that small steps can make a big impact," said Chanel Ratcliff, Atmos Energy's energy assistance coordinator.

National Weatherization Day celebrates collaboration between utilities, customers, contractors, and local partners to make energy use more efficient and sustainable.
