Observe the Tolerance Zone

The tolerance zone is the width of the pipeline (or other facility) plus 18 to 24 inches. The tolerance zone varies by state. Click here to find damage prevention requirements and resources for all states.

The following examples are of the tolerance zone for a 1-inch and 12-inch pipeline using the  18-inch tolerance zone for Texas.

Safely Confirm the Location of Utility Lines

The safest method for confirming the location of a utility line is to pothole by hand or soft digging in the tolerance zone and around the flags or paint used to mark the general area of an underground line.

If site conditions make using hand tools impractical, soft digging with vacuum excavation methods or pneumatic hand tools can be used, provided the equipment has been specifically designed and built for this purpose and operated by a trained and experienced worker. An Atmos Energy Damage Prevention representative also has to approve the use of vacuum and/or pneumatic hand tools.

Only Atmos Energy-trained professionals can make repairs on damaged natural gas facilities owned and operated by Atmos Energy.

APWA Utility Line Flag Colors

What Do the Flag Colors Represent?

Underground facilities are marked according to a designated APWA color code. When you call 811, you will notice these colored flags or paint are used to mark the location of underground utility-owned lines.

Atmos Energy natural gas pipelines are marked with a yellow flag that includes our logo.
