Water Heating

Cold showers should be a choice.

When you choose a natural gas water heater, you get more hot water while using less energy. There are two types of natural gas water heaters - tankless and storage (or tank) models.  Below are the benefits of each to help you choose the best model for your needs.

The industry standard for measuring water heater efficiency is called the Uniform Energy Factor (UEF).  The higher the UEF rating, the less energy it uses compared to models with lower UEF ratings. Many models of natural gas water heaters receive the Energy Star rating.

Storage Water Heaters

  • Did you know? A natural gas tank water heater heats water twice as fast and costs about 50% less to operate than a comparable electric model.
  • The the most common type of water heater, which keeps hot water in an insulated tank that is ready for immediate use.
  • Tank capacities typically range from 40 to 75 gallons
  • Lower cost to purchase and install
  • Lower operating costs than a comparable electric tank model
  • Storage-type models with higher energy efficiency ratings are called condensing because they have a secondary heat exchanger that extracts more heat from the combustion gas, cooling it to the point of condensation. Gas condensing water heaters require venting through a vertical PVC pipe and a condensate drain.

Tankless Water Heaters

  • Did you know? A tankless water heater provides continuous hot water so you will never run out of hot water.
  • Because there is no tank, water is heated and provided ‘on-demand’
  • Energy efficient because of no standby heat loss
  • Compact and can be mounted on an inside or outside wall to save space

Space Heating

Winters are cozier with natural gas.

Did you know? A natural gas furnace blows air that is about 20 degrees warmer than an electric heat pump.

Choosing a heating system is an important choice for your family’s safety and comfort, and because it accounts for about 30% of your home’s total energy cost.

What are the benefits of a natural gas furnace?

  • Delivers air between 110 and 130 degrees
  • Maintains efficiency regardless of the outdoor temperature
  • Typically lower installation and annual energy costs
  • Typically have a longer lifespan
  • Dependable heat for colder climates

What are the types of gas heating systems?

  • Forced air furnace
  • Hydronic or radiant system
  • Direct vent room heating

The industry standard for measuring gas furnace efficiency is AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), which indicates how efficiently a furnace converts energy into warm air for your home. The minimum rating for northern states is 90 AFUE. For southern states, the minimum rating is 80 AFUE. Click here to learn more about Energy Star ratings for gas furnaces.
