For millions of households across the country, the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a vital lifeline, and LIHEAP Action Day brings national attention to the critical role it plays in helping families afford safe, reliable energy. At Atmos Energy, helping our communities stay warm is one of our highest priorities and is part of our commitment to Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities.

Atmos Energy’s Sharing the Warmth program is supported by donations from customers and the company itself, with funds distributed to local nonprofit organizations that provide utility bill assistance. This past year, Sharing the Warmth received customer contributions totaling over $1 million which were supplemented by Atmos Energy contributions of $3.9 million. This $4.97 million enables us to partner with 124 nonprofit organizations across our eight states, helping 12,648 eligible individuals pay their natural gas bills.

LIHEAP is a federal program that provides critical funding to help millions of low-income households manage their immediate home heating and cooling needs. Beyond individual households, LIHEAP strengthens communities. By helping residents remain safely connected to energy, the program reduces emergency situations, supports public health, and promotes economic stability. When families can make their utility payments they can rely on consistent energy service, stay in their homes, maintain employment, and care for loved ones.

Awareness is a key part of LIHEAP Action Day. While being a vitally important resource, many households who qualify for assistance are unaware of the program or unsure how to apply. Education and outreach-though community organizations, energy providers, and local agencies help assistance reach those who need it most. LIHEAP Action Day encourages stakeholders at every level to share information, advocate for funding, and connect neighbors with available resources.

“LIHEAP is a lifeline for low-income families in the Mississippi Delta, protecting the health and stability of households struggling to keep their homes warm, cool, and livable. With support from the Mississippi Department of Human Services and partners like Atmos Energy, we assist more families across Bolivar County.  Together, we restore comfort, dignity, and hope.” Elnora Littleton, Executive Director, Bolivar County Community Action Agency.

As we recognize LIHEAP Action Day, it is an opportunity to learn more, spread the word, and take action in support of energy assistance programs that make a meaningful difference every day.
